Our Origin Story

Founded in 1881, The First Methodist Church of Vernon has had 33 pastors.

Early Days

The church began in a dugout on Paradise Creek in 1880, before Wilbarger County came into existence. In 1881 the church moved into a wood framed building on the corner of Pease and Deaf Smith streets in Vernon. In 1948 the church moved to a new building at its current location at 3029 Wilbarger.

Joining the Global Methodist Church

The church originally began as the First Methodist Church of Vernon, a part of the Methodist Episcipal Church South denomination. In 1968, when the M.E. South Church and the United Brethren Church merged and became the United Methodist Church, the name was changed to the First United Methodist Church of Vernon. In 2023, the congregation of the  First United Methodist Church of Vernon voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church and join the Global Methodist Church. The name was changed back to First Methodist Church at that time.
